Special Master
A neutral appointed under Rule 53 to manage discrete aspects of complex litigation.
Special masters handle discovery disputes, settlement negotiation, claims allocation, and lien resolution in litigation too large for a single judge to superintend directly. In settlement administration they frequently hold quasi-adjudicative authority over individual awards.
